Vox Pops: What people on the demo said

LONDON, Saturday 31 October 2009

"I am proud of this country. Look, the last few years have been hard. There is lots of discrimination and fear. I have been treated badly a few times, just for being a Muslim. But I'm still proud. That's how strong this country is. These people will never win. This should be the last of their little outings."

"The freedom I have to lead a religious life is the same freedom that atheists have to reject religion. It's good for both of us. We need to work together against common enemies, and that's what we're doing today."

"Actually I shouldn't have to be here at all. Who says white people have to stand up against the BNP? No one, that's who. But I have had enough of the extremists and if I can also reassure people that Muslims oppose the nutters by standing against them, I am very happy to do it."

"Islam4UK is just as bad as the BNP. The vast majority of the British people are fed up with all this extremist rubbish. But so many of us who feel that way never speak up. That needs to change. I'm doing my part."

"This demonstration is the work of all sorts of people who disagree about many issues. So what. We have lots in common too. It's easy to forget that sometimes. Not today. We're standing together. Enough of all this fear and division."

"Look, I'm not into religion at all. I actually think it is silly. But I'll tell you what's sacred for me: freedom of speech and religion. That's why I'm here, to stand up with people who care about freedom just as much as I do."

"Haven't you seen how some of the tabloids present Islam4UK as some kind of voice of all British Muslims? That's crazy. It's so wrong and nasty. Enough already. I'm very happy to help support Muslims opposing the extremists. I hope the tabloids bloody notice them for once."

"These people want to abolish democracy? No way. It is not theirs to abolish. They'll never win. I want them to give up and stop frightening people and wasting police time. They are free to shout their rubbish. That's how silly they are. Go on lads, try a demo like this in Riyadh. I dare you."

"I think Islam4UK is a joke. Let's keep it that way."
